Hosting That Scales Itself
No servers, no renewal invoices, no crashed store on Diwali sale night. Comparable managed WordPress hosting costs ₹8,000-₹25,000 a year and still needs someone watching it.
Web Development
TWO BUDGETS
Shopify website development cost in India is really two budgets that owners keep mixing up: what Shopify bills you every month (rent) and what you pay once to get the store built properly (construction). Comparisons go wrong when someone weighs one agency's construction price against another platform's rent. Separate the two and the numbers start behaving.
These figures move with Shopify's pricing reviews and the USD-INR rate, so verify them on Shopify's India site the week you budget. Themes come next: Dawn (free) is genuinely usable, paid themes run ₹12,000-₹35,000 one-time, and a custom design from a Shopify website development company replaces both — that construction half is where most of the Shopify website development cost in India actually sits.
Two billing details bite later if you skip them now: the subscription invoice attracts 18% GST, and app charges bill separately in USD, so your card statement always reads slightly worse than the plan page. Add the small extras — a domain at ₹800-₹1,500 a year, business email at roughly ₹1,500-₹2,500 per user per year — and the true monthly floor becomes visible.
THE ₹ CREEP
You start on Basic at about ₹1,994 a month on annual billing. So far, exactly what the brochure promised.
Dawn works, but most brands buy a paid theme or commission a custom design so their store doesn't look like the two hundred other stores running the same template.
Reviews, WhatsApp chat, abandoned-cart recovery, bundles — most apps bill $10-$30 a month each, in dollars. Four apps and you've quietly added ₹3,500-₹10,000 a month at 2026 exchange rates.
A professional Indian build — theme customisation, product setup, speed work, tracking — runs ₹35,000-₹1,50,000 one-time depending on how custom the design gets.
Every card order surrenders roughly 2% plus GST to the gateway, and Shopify can add its own third-party gateway fee on top depending on plan. At ₹3,00,000 in monthly card sales, fees become a five-figure monthly line of their own.
PAYMENTS REALITY
In the US, Shopify Payments collapses fees into one clean number. It isn't available in India, so every Indian store runs on a third-party gateway — Razorpay, PayU or Cashfree domestically, PayPal for international orders. That creates two separate fee layers to check before you commit: the gateway's own MDR (UPI is currently zero for most merchants; cards typically 1.8-2.4% plus GST on the fee) and Shopify's third-party gateway transaction fee, which has historically ranged from 0.5% to 2% by plan. Get your exact rate from Shopify support in writing — at volume, it changes the entire comparison.
A realistic first-year total for a properly built store on Basic: ₹90,000-₹2,50,000 covering subscription, apps, a theme or custom design, and the build itself. On WooCommerce, more of that money lands in year one and less of it recurs — we've run the identical math in our ecommerce website cost guide if you want the side-by-side.
Our take, informed by 17 client websites across 6 countries: Shopify earns its rent when you're scaling a D2C brand and your time is worth more than the subscription — checkout, inventory and uptime simply work while you sell. If the budget is tight and volumes are early-stage, start leaner with our ecommerce development team and move to Shopify when order volume justifies the rent.
One warning before you decide: migration is cheap in one direction only. Moving product data from WooCommerce to Shopify is routine work; unwinding a heavily app-dependent Shopify store two years in is not. Make the platform call deliberately, with the full first-year number in front of you — not from a plan page that shows only the rent.
THE OTHER SIDE
Shopify's monthly bill replaces real costs. Count them before comparing totals with any other platform.

SSL, PCI-DSS and platform patches are Shopify's problem, not yours. On self-hosted stores those are recurring tasks that someone has to own — and gets blamed for.
Shopify's checkout is tested by millions of orders a day. You will never debug a payment plugin at 11pm during your own festival sale — that alone is worth part of the rent.
Platform updates don't break themes the way plugin updates can, so post-launch retainers stay small. WooCommerce needs a maintenance habit; Shopify mostly needs fresh content.

FAQ
Basic, in almost every case. It covers a full online store, unlimited products and the reports a new brand actually reads. Starter is only a checkout link for WhatsApp and Instagram selling, and the mid-tier Shopify plan pays for itself only once staff accounts and deeper reporting matter — usually well after launch. Upgrade when a specific limit blocks you, not before.
Historically, yes. Because Shopify Payments isn't available in India, every store uses a third-party gateway, and Shopify has applied a per-transaction fee of roughly 0.5-2% by plan on top of the gateway's own MDR. The exact rate has changed over the years and can differ by plan and agreement, so confirm your current rate with Shopify support in writing before launch.
A typical stack — reviews, WhatsApp and abandoned-cart automation, bundles or upsells — adds ₹3,000-₹10,000 a month, and because most apps bill in USD the line grows whenever the rupee slips. Audit the stack quarterly: stores routinely keep paying for apps that a theme update or a native Shopify feature has already replaced.
